Chapter   Eight

Later on that night....

"So he actually had the guts to show his face?" AJ asked Lynn, unbelieving. Lynn had just told him about the day's earlier events.

"Yeah," she answered. "I was so surprised he'd even come back to Seattle after what he did to me."

"What do mean 'come back'?"

"Dwayne used to live here a few years ago. I don't really want to go into it," Lynn said. "I'm just glad he didn't ask to stay here. Not that I would've let him...."

"And he really expected you to cancel our plans?" AJ asked.

"Yes, can you believe that? It's like he thinks I'll do anything for him." Lynn got quiet for a second. "I guess that's kinda my fault. When we first got together, I would do anything to be with him. Stay out all night, lie about where I was going, stupid stuff like that."

"Well, he shouldn't expect that, even when you two were together," AJ said. "But you're not anymore. You're my girlfriend now. And I want you to know I would never make you do anything you don't want to."

"But that's just it, AJ. I wanted to do all of it to be with him. I had no restrictions, no limits to what I would do."

"All the same, I wouldn't do that to you."

"I know."

The two of them were quiet for a few minutes before AJ spoke up.

"Do you want to get back together with him?"

"What?! No!! How could you even think that?"

"Come on, Lynn. No matter what way you remember it, he was still a big part of your life before me. You moved to his hometown...."

"I moved here because Cornell is a great school. It had nothing to do with Dwayne."

"So you had no plans to move into together before you broke up?"

"No. Dwayne always talked about moving back to Seattle, but he never mentioned wanting to live with me." Lynn suddenly knew why AJ was so nervous. "Are you worried that I'm not over him?"

"No, of course not," he said. "I believe in our relationship completely. If you didn't want to be with me, you wouldn't be."

Lynn heard him say the words, but she still wasn't sure he meant it. "I am over him. He hurt me really bad, AJ, but I got over it. If he really means what he told me about wanting to be in Tyler's life, I'm not going to say no. I don't want to be like that."

"I can understand that. I guess I am a little scared of losing you. It's always like that when the ex-boyfriend enters the picture again."

"I know. But you don't anything to worry about. I'm not saying we'll be together forever, but, right now, you're the only one I want to be with."

Lynn could hear the smile in his voice when he answered. "And you're the only one I want to be with. Let's talk about something else. Brian said that Emily is coming with you."

"Yeah. She's really excited at the thought of seeing Brian again, just like I am about seeing you."

"I can't wait to see you, too," AJ told her. "How about you and I make our relationship visible to the fans this weekend? I hate having to keep you a secret from our fans. It shouldn't be that big a deal for them. They're used to us having girlfriends."

"How did they react to your last girlfriend?" Lynn asked.

"They hated her," AJ said matter-of-factly. Lynn laughed. "I'm just kidding, baby. A lot of the fans didn't seem to mind her being around, but there were a lot that didn't like her."

"What about Tyler? What if they find out about him?"

"Then they find out. They're just gonna have to accept that you two will be in my life for a while. Maybe forever."

"Maybe," Lynn said softly. "Well, I better let you go, sweetie. It's probably two in the morning there in Florida."

"It's almost 3:30am," said AJ. "I'll talk to you later. I miss you."

"I miss you, too," Lynn responded. "Tell Kevin, Howie, Brian, and Nick I said 'hi' and I'll see them Friday."

"Will do. Bye."

"Bye." Lynn and AJ hung up.

Please let tomorrow go by fast, Lynn thought. I don't know how long I can stand to be around Dwayne. She walked in her bedroom and turned on her light, keeping it dim so Tyler wouldn't wake up. Lynn changed into her nightshirt, turned off the light, and got into bed. A few minutes later, she was asleep.
